Daily Painting
Daily painting is an exercise in motivation and perseverance. These may not be the first qualities one looks for in a summer project. Summer is for taking off. Summer is for lazing around. What if one just doesn't feel like painting? Well, I plan to find out by painting nearly everyday during my summer on Long Beach Island in New Jersey. It will be just me holding myself to this goal by posting each day. I hope by painting everyday to hone my skills and to see what develops in style and technique. By the time I leave for Denver in August I will have 42 paintings; most decent, some disasters and a few really good ones. That is my goal.

Thoughts after five weeks
Still amazed at my production, I am getting a little bored with my narrow parameters and looking forward to taking more time and approaching more complex subject matter and composition when I am done with this project. For a change and after asking permission, I sketched some children at play on the beach in anticipation of painting a few. That will test my feel for figure painting. Daily painting is still an effective exercise, allowing me to try new things with a sense of playing with less emphasis on the outcome. Confession time: I haven't totally let go of outcome - I have painted over a few rejects and thrown away a few too.
