Daily Painting

Daily painting is an exercise in motivation and perseverance. These may not be the first qualities one looks for in a summer project. Summer is for taking off. Summer is for lazing around. What if one just doesn't feel like painting? Well, I plan to find out by painting nearly everyday during my summer on Long Beach Island in New Jersey. It will be just me holding myself to this goal by posting each day. I hope by painting everyday to hone my skills and to see what develops in style and technique. By the time I leave for Denver in August I will have 42 paintings; most decent, some disasters and a few really good ones. That is my goal.

Thoughts after one week

This project is harder than I thought but not the painting part.  Except for the constant mess, it has been fun to work everyday.   The problem is that this project is both less and more than I expected.  Less because I am restricting myself to smaller work in order to get a finished product to post.  Small feels a bit limiting. More because I am coming up against my insecurities having to post what I did each day.  I have found myself wrangling for an out if I don't like my results.  What if I paint 2 of the same thing and post the better.  What if I keep several works in progress to post as needed if I don't like my daily?  Is this cheating?  I set the goal without making rules and now I wonder what are the rules.  Do I need rules?

After one week I have 7 posts as per goal.  I also have 2 works in progress, a gift and several trading cards which I am stockpiling for a September event.  I am painting more than ever and I am still looking forward to it each day.  If my goal is to produce, I am producing.  But after such a cavalier start, I am thinking of rethinking my goal.

  1. your goal is to meet your own expectations, not some arbitrary definition limited by either time or space

  2. I have just encouraged my students to create lots of small works instead of working on one large one for a couple months. Reason is they get to make the composition, value and color choices over and over and will more quickly develop greater skill and a sense of their voice in it. I vote for this great goal.

  3. Diane!
What a wonderful and inspiring project..........remember it is always possible to change goals, just keep going.
As I am looking at carpal tunnel surgery right hand in near future, I take courage from you to paint often with my left hand. Let us keep in touch. I enjoy looking at your daily paintings........and challenge myself to keep painting no matter what.
